Do you know, what is Pi Day? Oh, it is the funny spring day, which celebrates mathematicians of all the world in honor of the number pi! Why Pi Day is the 14th of March? Because it is 3,14 :)
And in this interesting day we can not only solve examples, invent the formulas and prove the theorems, but bake something tasty things! I offer you a recipe of Pi Pie with apples, it is wonderful, yummy and spectacular!
Why do we bake pi pie? It’s very simple! Look on this picture and you’ll understand:)
On my thought, the best pi pie recipe is Apple Pie with shortbread dough. You can decorate it appropriately to the holiday – with Greece letter π and numbers!
So, let’s arrange a Pi Day Party with tea, pie and joy!
Ingredients:For a round baking pan 22-24 cm in diameter: For the dough –
- 250 g flour;
- 125 g butter;
- 1 egg yolk;
- 2 tablespoons sugar;
- 3 tablespoons milk;
- A pinch of salt.
- 600-700 g apples;
- 3 tablespoon sugar;
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon;
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice;
- 1 tablespoon rum or cognac;
- 1 tablespoon with top semolina;
- 1 coffeespoon butter.
- 50 g of chocolate;
- 1-2 tablespoon brown sugar;
- Egg white.
At first let’s do shortbread dough, because it must to cool at fridge during 30 minutes. Sift the flour into a bowl, add sugar, salt, yolk, cubed cold butter and grind it all with hands in crumble.
Then spoon-by-spoon add cold milk and put the dough in a ball quickly. Then press it a little to form a disk, put into a food package and to a fridge for a half of hour.
Meanwhile do apple filling. Peel, core and cube washed apples. Add sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice and cognac for fine aroma, a spoon of semolina to soak up excess moisture and mix.
Now, it’s time to preheat oven to 180-190C. Cover the baking pan and the table with baking paper. Sprinkle with flour the paper on the table. Divide the dough in two parts: 2/3 and 1/3. Roll the biggest piece in a circle 3-4 cm more than diameter of your pan. Trim the edges and put tit into the pan. Fill with apples. Roll the other part of dough in a smallest circle and cover pie. Pinch edges. Then cut π in center of the pie. Put small pieces of butter into the hole – apple juice cannot come out during the baking, and the steam vice versa will go out and won’t crack the pie. You may make mathematical décor from scraps of dough.
Lubricate pie with egg white and sprinkle with brown sugar.
Bake Pi Pie at 180-190C during 50 minutes – 1 hour, to golden crust.
Let the pie cool in the pan, then place it on a dish and draw the number of π around the pie. How much of this numbers do you remember? :)
Have a happy Pi Day!
